Have you ever seen the green scratch? Shall we conceive the Green Scratch [La raya verde] as an atmospheric phenomenon? An event one might wait for in the same fashion one stands still in front of the horizon wishing for the green ray. Every projection is a chance for the green scratch to emerge. No longer a stable object, the image is a eroding territory: the phenomenon of an incision on the emulsion of a colour motion picture, an effect of dye layers eroding, a geography, a subtle valley, a cloud of expectations as the Green Flash at sunset is.

Whether due to a bad projector, projecting a damaged print, or simply due to excessive use, sometimes film prints will get scratched. Scratches to the base layer of a film will appear as thin and dark marks anywhere in the image, same as you might expect to appear on any kind of surface capable of permanent scratching. More unusual are scratches in the film emulsion itself, which erases certain colour layers therefore the marks appear green. The flaw, the deterioration, the erosion, they are an opportunity to see beyond, to reveal latent poetic aspects of the material and the reality.
